Shamus and Nero award-winning author Brad Parks takes readers back to the beginning of investigative reporter Carter Ross's career with this intriguing prequel short story.
Only 24 years old and still a wide-eyed reporter for a tiny backwater newspaper, Ross is getting his crack at the big leagues with an interview at New Jersey's largest paper, The Eagle-Examiner. If—that is—he nails the interview and the on-the-spot writing test. Ross has never had a problem spinning a story, but provided with notes he didn't take and quotes he didn't hear it feels flat, and he's not so sure about his chances.
So when a car crashes into a building in a nearby town and Carter overhears the assignments editor complaining that there's no one left in the building whom she can send out to cover the story, Carter jumps at the chance and quickly finds himself dangerously close to being in over his head in "The Nightgown," another stellar addition to Brad Parks's acclaimed mystery series.
The Nightgown A Carter Ross Story Carter Ross Mysteries eBook Brad Parks
Twenty-four-year-old Carter Ross is desperate to become a reporter at the "Newark Eagle-Examiner." During his interview, he must write a fictitious article using fictitious information. When State Senator Lenny Ryan crashes his car and no one is available to report and write an article on it, Carter volunteers to investigate. Soon Carter is uncovering a humorous tale of deception, adultery and sleaze.Brad Parks' "The Nightgown" is a mildly humorous short story that will engage the reader for approximately one hour. It is a prequel to his best-selling mystery series involving Carter Ross ["Faces of the Gone" (Faces of the Gone: A Mystery), "Eyes of the Innocent" (Eyes of the Innocent: A Mystery) and "The Girl Next Door" (The Girl Next Door: A Mystery)]. The only reoccurring characters from this series to appear in the short story are the ancient, crotchety Sal Szanto and the vain Barbie doll look alike Tina Thompson. I suppose the gay Puerto Rican intern, Tommy Hernandez, has yet to be hired.
After downloading "The Nightgown" to my Apple iPhone 4, I learned that most of it consisted of the prologue and first chapter from Brad Parks' latest novel, "The Girl Next Door." Furthermore, this short story is not on a par with his full-length novels. It may contain Parks' sassy, wisecracking humor but it does not have any gruesome murders. "The Nightgown," which can be looked upon as a publicity tool for "The Girl Next Door," is only recommended for devoted fans of Brad Parks.

The Nightgown A Carter Ross Story Carter Ross Mysteries eBook Brad Parks Reviews
This prequel to the Carter Ross mystery series is essential - and fun - reading. The novella reveals how Carter got his first job and first case. Many dedicated readers will be disappointed to find it's only available as an ebook.
Move over jack reacher I have a new fiction crush, Carter Ross. I just recently discovered brad parks books and in two weeks read them all , funny and exciting. I hope he continues to write more about carter Ross
The only thing wrong with this story is that it needs to be a novel. Carter Ross is the Bob Woodward of the mystery genre. Read all the Carter Ross books you can get your hands on. If a murder mystery can have humor too, it's the best kind.
I have read all of Parks' books and enjoy the Carter Ross journalist character. He is a refreshing change from the usual detective or P.I. "The Nightgown" is another good book in this series and I eagerly await the next one!
I like this author and was thrilled it was a deal on but it felt like I only got a few chapters or a synopsis of the novel; it was incredibly short. Author's other books are not that short. Do not think I got the whole novel. Was keenly disappointed in length.
This short book introduces us to Carter Ross, one of the last investigative reporters of our time. He picks up a thread and manages to unravel the whole career of a crooked politician in Newark, NJ. This is a quick read and you will want to read the other books in this series.
I have read the first three of the Carter Ross mysteries, and really enjoy them. When I purchased this one, I thought it was going to be another of the novels. However, it is a short story relating how Ross first gets hired at the Eagle-Examiner. So, I did enjoy learning that background. And the story, while short, is interesting.
